I think its absolutely essential for you to understand how these essays are marked before actually preparing for them. There is a slight change than what is mentioned in the article.

There are two graders, one human and one machine. And if there is a difference of more than one point between the two gradings there would be a third human grader.

And the most important criteria on which the essays are rated is , believe it or not, the LENGTH of the essay. So write long and write organised and you will score a 6.

Ok here goes - AWA tips from a 6 pointer (thank u, thank u !    :D )

Alrite to start off.. I wud stress on what Abdul has already written - LENGTH. write as much as u can ..if u have stuff to write - DO NOT HOLD URSELF BACK. There is no word limit for the GMAT AWA.

And making Grammatical Mistakes is not a crime.. but make sure that the mistakes are not too many . The machine grader wud obv pick out spelling mistakes etc , so make sure u READ THRU ur essay at least once after you are done.

And as already mentioned ...make sure ur essay has a proper Structure.. Basically just use the one's mentioned in Princeton Review or something..They can 'fit in' into any essay ! and trust me... they do help!

Thats all from my side..
and btw .. don't worry if u were not able to click on Submit coz the time ran out..coz whatever u have written is stored (happened to me ! ) - BTW the last point is something that shudn't happen coz it basically shows bad time management!  ;)

another word of note is that, preparing the structure and style for your gmat helps a long way in your writing for TOEFL as well.

Once you have prepared for GMAT, the TOEFL would bea  walk int he park

I think as long as the AWA essay is somewhat decent..it doesnt have to be college-level perfect...

As is mentioned, the evaluator is a computer and a student doing parttime evaluation and you will get good scores from both with a student and the computer if you could write nice and long!

so keep "length" as an utmost important thing!
